Why Does My Skin Feel Dry Even After Moisturizing?

Editor's Note:

Hi Jenny!

Thanks for the compliment! I know exactly what you mean about moisturizers that feel great at first, but an hour later your face feels dry again.

I've found that as my skin has gotten older, sometimes my regular moisturizer just isn't enough. That's when I pay more attention to how I layer my products.

Here's what works for my dry skin

I like to keep things pretty simple:

  1. Start with slightly damp skin. After cleansing, I gently pat my face dry but leave a little moisture behind.

  2. Add hydration. A serum with hyaluronic acid or glycerin can help your skin hold onto water.

  3. Apply a good moisturizer. I look for ingredients that help soften skin and support its moisture barrier, including ceramides and moisturizing oils.

  4. Add a little face oil if needed. When my skin feels especially dry, I'll press a couple of drops of facial oil over my moisturizer. This helps soften my skin and reduce moisture loss without making my face look overly greasy.

I've used Carolyn's Hydrating Creme Masque for years, and I also use ZENMED's Omega Ceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer. Both are products I've personally enjoyed for my mature skin.

If you're looking for moisturizer ideas, I share what I use and other options in my guide to moisturizers for mature skin.

What about face oils?

I love facial oils, but I learned that how much you use and when you apply them makes a big difference.

I usually apply my moisturizer first, then press just 1–2 drops of oil over my face when I need extra moisture protection.

For a long time I was using too much oil and wondering why my face looked shiny instead of hydrated!

I explain what finally worked for me in Why Face Oil Made My Skin Look Worse (And How to Use It Correctly).

One more thing to consider

Since you mentioned that your dryness started suddenly, it's worth looking at your cleanser and other skincare products too. Harsh cleansing, frequent exfoliation, or irritating ingredients can leave your skin feeling tight no matter how much moisturizer you apply.

If the dryness persists or comes with irritation, itching, or redness, a dermatologist can help you figure out what's causing it.

My advice? Before spending money on another expensive cream, try applying your moisturizer to slightly damp skin and see whether a barrier-supporting cream or a little facial oil makes a difference.

Hope this helps, Jenny! Let me know what works for you.

Best,
Linda

hyaluronic acid skin care, Water, moisturizers

I would recommend drinking lots of water! That's got a lot of health benefits, of course, but since I upped my intake, I've noticed a difference in my skin.

I also use Yu-Be Skin Care, a Japanese line, because the moisturizer (and exfoliator to scrub off dry dead skin) makes my skin soft and smooth and springy without being greasy.

Hello and thanks for your email regarding the best way on hydrating facial skin. I'll give your suggestion a try.

However, I have to admit I am currently in LOVE with the Anti-Aging + Calming Duo Hydrating combo.

It's a hyaluronic acid cream and serum combo that you use together twice a day. Actually, in the summer months I only need the cream and then add the serum to regime around fall/winter.

I've been using it for a few years and have not found anything that comes close - even though I'm always open to trying new products because you never know when you'll find something even better. 😄

My biggest pet peeve about most hydrating moisturizers is they are either too greasy and leave your face looking super shiny. Or they seem to disappear in an hour and your face looks and feels dry and dehydrated.

I also love that the ingredients are simple and natural....Hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, seaweed extract, and omega 3 fatty acids.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. When my YuBe skin products arrive I'll share my results/experience here.

Thanks! 👍
