You can put Preparation H under your eyes, but I wouldn’t make it a regular eye treatment.
Some people think it gives a slight temporary smoothing or de-puffing effect, but the under-eye area is thin and sensitive, results vary, and newer formulas don’t work the same way older beauty tips made it sound.
Because of that, I’d stick with products made specifically for under-eye puffiness instead. Here’s why this old beauty trick is more complicated than it sounds.

This beauty trick has been around for years.
The idea came from older hemorrhoid cream formulas that were known to reduce swelling. So people started wondering if that same effect could help under-eye bags.
And I get why it sounds tempting.
If your eyes look puffy and tired, you want something quick. I know!
I’ve tested plenty of under-eye products over the years, and I understand the appeal of a cheap drugstore fix. In fact, I wrote a page on how to reduce puffy eyes that walks you through the most common causes and what can actually help.
But this particular Preparation H trick is where things get a little more complicated.
This is where things get a little misleading.
When people say Preparation H “tightens” under-eye bags, it’s usually not true tightening.
In many cases, what you’re seeing is more of a temporary surface effect.
Because the product is thick and creamy, it can:
That can make the under-eye area look a little better at first.
But it doesn’t last.
And for me, it actually went the other way. When I tried Preparation H under my eyes, my puffiness looked worse, not better.
That’s why I’m careful about calling this a “tightening” trick. It’s not really tightening the skin. It’s more about how the product sits on the surface — and on some faces, that can backfire.
A lot of the old Preparation H beauty advice was based on older formulas or versions sold in other countries.
That matters.
Most current U.S. formulas are made to protect irritated skin and reduce discomfort in a completely different area of the body. They are not made to smooth, firm, or treat delicate under-eye skin.
So when someone says, “Preparation H worked great under my eyes,” they may have used a different formula, an older version, or they may have just seen a very short-term effect.
This part matters more than people think.
Preparation H creams are usually lighter. They may absorb a little better and feel less greasy.
Ointments are thicker. They sit on top of the skin and can make fine lines, crepey texture, or puffiness look more noticeable.
So if you’ve ever tried something under your eyes and thought, “Why does this look worse?” the texture of the product may be part of the problem.
The under-eye area does not always like thick, greasy products.
Sometimes, people notice a slight temporary de-puffing effect.
But it is not consistent.
It does not fix the cause of eye bags, and it does not work like a product designed for under-eye tightening.
In my own experience, Preparation H was not a reliable under-eye fix. It sounded better as a beauty trick than it looked on my skin.
If you’re also curious about Plexaderm, I have a separate Plexaderm vs Preparation H page where I compare the two more directly.
That’s why I don’t rely on it.
This is where I’d be careful.
Preparation H is not made for the eye area. The skin under your eyes is thinner and more sensitive, so it can react differently than other areas.
Possible issues include:
That doesn’t mean everyone will have a bad reaction.
But for me, this falls into the “not worth using regularly” category.
If under-eye puffiness is something you deal with often, I’d focus on options made for that area.
That might include:
Once you know what kind of puffiness you’re dealing with, it’s easier to choose the right fix.
This page is just here to answer one question:
Can you put Preparation H on eye bags, and is it worth it?
If you want to see how it compares with a product made for temporary under-eye tightening, read my Plexaderm vs Preparation H page.

Preparation H under the eyes is one of those old beauty tricks that sounds simple, but it’s not something I’d treat like a real under-eye solution.
Some people may see a small temporary effect.
But it’s not made for that area, it’s not consistent, and it can irritate delicate skin.
If your goal is to look less puffy or less tired, you’ll usually get better results from products and routines designed specifically for the under-eye area.
Does Preparation H work for eye bags?
Preparation H may give a slight temporary de-puffing effect for some people, but it does not work consistently and does not fix the cause of eye bags.
Can you use Preparation H under your eyes safely?
Preparation H is not made for the under-eye area. Some people may tolerate it, but it can cause dryness, irritation, redness, or stinging, especially on sensitive skin.
Does Preparation H help wrinkles?
Preparation H does not truly help wrinkles. Any smoothing effect is temporary and comes from how the product sits on the skin, not from improving skin firmness or elasticity.
Can Preparation H tighten skin?
Preparation H may create a temporary tighter-looking effect in some cases, but it does not actually tighten skin in a lasting way.
